FSSAI registration is a mandatory requirement for all food business operators (FBOs) in India to ensure food safety and quality. It applies to manufacturers, processors, distributors, and sellers of food products.

FSSAI registrations are divided into three categories based on business size and turnover:

  • Basic Registration: For small businesses with an annual turnover of up to ₹12 lakhs.
  • State Registration: For businesses with an annual turnover between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crores.
  • Central Registration: For larger businesses with a turnover above ₹20 crores or those involved in import/export or inter-state activities.

You need State Registration if your business turnover is between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crores. For turnovers above ₹20 crores or specific activities like import/export, you need Central Registration.

Key documents include:

  • A passport-sized photo of the applicant.
  • Identity proof (like Aadhaar, PAN, or Voter ID).
  • Business address proof (like utility bill or tax receipt and rental agreement).
  • Proof of business type (such as incorporation certificate or partnership deed).
  • Food safety management plan (for Central or State registration).

The registration process typically takes around 7-10 working days for Basic and State registrations. For Central Registration, it may take up to 30 working days.

Here are the government fees for FSSAI registration:

  1. Basic Registration: ₹100 per year
  2. State Registration:
    • For businesses with a turnover between ₹12 lakh and ₹1 crore: ₹2,000 per year
    • For businesses with a turnover between ₹1 crore and ₹10 crore: ₹5,000 per year
    • For businesses with a turnover above ₹10 crore: ₹7,500 per year
  3. Central Registration: ₹7,500 per year

These fees are only for the government’s part of the process and do not include any service charges

Yes, once you submit the FSSAI registration application, you can operate your business while the application is processed. However, the FSSAI number must be obtained before full-scale operations.

FSSAI registration is valid for 1 to 5 years, depending on the period chosen at the time of application. Renewal must be done before the expiry date.

  • FSSAI registration renewal should be initiated 30 days before the expiry date. You can apply for renewal through the FSSAI online portal or via Taxamicus who handles the renewal process for you.

Penalties vary depending on the violation. For example, failure to obtain FSSAI registration may result in fines up to ₹5 lakhs, and the business may be shut down until compliance is achieved.

No, FSSAI registration is location-specific. If you change your business location, you will need to apply for a new FSSAI registration for the new address.
